City Lodge Hotel Group once again visited Emthonjeni Community Centre in Johannesburg’s Honeydew area, to donate soft goods and toiletries for Easter. This time, the donation included 1 935 items of linen and towelling, 415 pillows and 3 000 bars of soap, all worth almost R266 000 (€16 000). The City Lodge team also handed out Easter eggs to the children attending the nursery school on site.
The group’s relationship with Emthonjeni Community Centre goes back to 2018, and last year they donated R228 000 (€13 800) of goods to this multi-faceted organisation. Most of the items go into the centre’s Swop Shop, where Zandspruit residents can earn points for bringing in glass for recycling, the points can be used to ‘purchase’ goods that have been donated.
Towelling is in strong demand as the centre has a sewing programme in which ladies sew reusable sanitary pads that are donated to girls in the area. The centre also houses a bakery, vegetable garden and feeding scheme. Emthonjeni’s mission is to uplift communities in need.
COO of City Lodge Hotel Group, Lindiwe Sangweni-Siddo, says: “We are delighted that our hotels in Johannesburg continue to support Emthonjeni Community Centre and bring relief to this community in need. These relationships are built up over years and we get to see the amazing work that is done on our doorstep.”
