New family cottage opens at Three Tree Hill, KwaZulu Natal

Burchell’s Cottage is the new addition to the accommodation offerings at Three Tree Hill.

Three Tree Hill in KwaZulu Natal has added a new family cottage, Burchell’s Cottage.

It is named in honour of William John Burchell, a 19th Century explorer, naturalist and author. In 1811, Burchell set of on a four-year, 7 000km journey through South Africa, collecting plant and animal specimens for research.

Burchell’s Cottage overlooks the Spioenkop Game Reserve and Mountain.

The cottage comprises two en-suite rooms, sleeping two couples or two adults and up to four children. Other facilities include a large deck, tea and coffee facilities, gas cooker, fridge/freezer, braai (barbecue) facilities and electronic safes.

The cottage has been decorated with replicas of Burchell’s drawings and a printed glass map detailing his journey. The furniture is locally custom-made using reclaimed cypress and cedar wood, while soft furnishings are made with locally produced fabric. Brass light fittings were salvaged from a shipwreck.

Guests can enjoy guided nature walks, mountain biking and horse trail riding at the property. Additionally, nearby, guests can do guided tours of the KZN Battlefields.
