On Monday, the tourism trade had an open opportunity to interact with Sisa Ntshona, CEO, South African Tourism. This was part of a series hosted by Tourism Update and you can listen to it here.
After an initial summary of highlights from 2017, which included on-track tourism growth for the 5-in-5 campaign, which looks to increase annual tourism numbers to South Africa by 40% over the next five years, Ntshona was able to take a selection of questions from listeners.
Questions included:
- Where are we now with Satsa and SA Tourism with self-regulation of adventure tourism?
- Tourism safety: Do tour operators have a mandate that allows them not to have to stop for people purporting to be police in uniform when leaving the airport? How can we influence security in SA?
- What marketing programmes does SA Tourism have for a metro like Nelson Mandela Bay Metro?
- What programmes are in place to ‘clean up’ tourism areas?
- Is SA Tourism looking at developing further markets with SAA cutting routes?
- With potential growth in the Chinese market, something that visa regulations are hampering, does SA Tourism have a plan in place overcome this?
- With the appointment of the Indaba organiser only last week, is it now too late to have a properly organised show next year?
- Has progress been made in the collection of tourism data in order for the trade to interpret and apply it?
- How can the Professional Hunters’ Association of SA be allowed to approve canned lion hunting?
