Table Mountain reopens fire-damaged trails

SANParks has announced that Table Mountain National Park’s currently closed trails in Tokai and Silvermine East (including the Kalk Bay, St James and Muizenberg mountains and the Steenberg Plateau) will reopen on July 1.

The Silvermine picnic site, boardwalk around the dam, river walk and other trails will remain closed due to infrastructure damage, including burnt ablution blocks at Silvermine West.

“Infrastructure repairs will take some time and we will not be able to open the picnic areas while there are no toilets,” SANParks said in a statement.

SANParks also closed Silvermine and Tokai because of post-fire vegetation regrowth needing ecological support. The new fynbos plants require time to grow without human impact potentially disrupting the rejuvenation.

SANParks apologised for inconvenience caused by the closures stating that repair efforts will proceed “as speedily as possible” but may be affected by winter weather.
