Wilderness Namibia has shared images of the country’s transforming landscapes following recent rains after an eight-year dry spell.
Commenting on the long-awaited rains, Gerhard Thirion, Wilderness Namibia’s Environmental Manager, said: “The hyper-arid landscape has transformed and is now covered in a green blanket of grass teeming with birds, insects and other wildlife trying to take advantage of the over-abundance of food. A persistent low-pressure system has been pushing huge volumes of moist air from southwest Angola into northwest Namibia, all along the escarpment and Namib Desert, causing nearly all ephemeral rivers to reach the Atlantic Ocean while quenching the thirst of the surrounding desert. We are hopeful that game numbers will bounce back and cover the now very green desert plains and mountains.”
Joryn Barnard, Head of Sales for Wilderness Namibia, added: “After extremely low rainfall over the past eight years, many Namibians were facing devastating drought-related challenges. Then it rained and rained and rained! Some places in Namibia recorded up to 180mm in mere hours – more than in any previous rainy season combined! Never in 20 years in Namibia have I seen our beautiful country so green! From Windhoek to Sossusvlei, over the dune belt and past the majestic Brandberg, all the way to Doro Nawas – green as far as the eye can see!”
